Our housing strategy and model is the result of a 15-month grassroots community engagement initiative. It began in Victoria in May 2015 as an examination of micro-housing, when a committed group of people with diverse experience gathered to discuss how to create low-cost housing alternatives for people experiencing homelessness, those at risk of homelessness, and those with low or minimum income seeking a more affordable and communal way of life. Under the banner of MicroHousing Victoria Society, and with seed funding of $25,000 from the City of Victoria, we engaged deeply with our community – with people experiencing homelessness and using shelter services, service providers, community associations, rotary clubs, municipalities, school and hospital district boards, BC Housing, and CMHC. Big new ideas emerged from these dialogues – new ideas about land-use, design, and financing. To pursue these ideas, Anomura Housing Society, a new non-profit housing corporation, was created, freeing MicroHousing Victoria Society to continue its focus on nurturing alternative forms housing.
